Bluegrass thrash according one review I saw. Not sure I would take it quite that far, but they really do take bluegrass and give it a a rock’n roll twist. Love the album so far. Added it to the playlist today

Added Darrell Scott’s Modern Hymns to the stream. All covers but what covers. First heard ‘Jesus Was a Capricorn’ on WDVX’s online stream but I think ‘All the Lovely Ladies’ is my favourite right now. Never heard a cover of Gordon Lightfoot done quite so well.

I removed a lot of the classic alternative artists last night. I am hoping to have more time to listen to new music over the next few months and wanted to make some space for that. Nice to hear the classics again for a while, but it was starting to sound like classic rock to me. New stuff should be most alt-country from labels like Bloodshot Records and Suburban Home, with maybe some Fat Wreck artists thrown in.

I think I may have to give up the ‘alt country’ label on live365. I have not had a lot of time to dive into new music lately so I keep digging out the old stuff from the CD collection. Anyway, besides finally adding Zevon’s Sentimental Hygiene to the mix, I am putting in:

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (world’s most underrated band courtesy of Fat Wreck and Fat Mike)
Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Jackknife to a Swan

Other than a M theme I do not see much coherence there – thankfully coherence is not expected. Watch the video ….

More classic alternative as much as I hate the label. Adding these to the stream so I can hear cuts now and again from Husker Du. As the stream approaches 1500 songs I imagine it will be less now and more again, but it will still be more often than I have heard them lately. I regret I never got to see them live – my own fault. Sentimental Hygiene…

So I went to add the Warren Zevon CD “Sentimental Hygiene” to the stream and I could not find it in my collection. It was there once upon a time. Then I went to buy some of the tunes from Itunes and/or Amazon and discovered none of the tunes were available. Then I went to buy it and discovered I would have to wait for weeks. Something about the CD does not want to be streamed.

Anyway, I added (in no particular order):

I meant to get ‘Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner’ but forgot. I did not mean to get ‘Lawyers, Guns, and Money’ or “Werewolves of London’. If you want to hear those turn on your local classic rock station and listen for ten minutes.

When I get the CD I will add to the stream. Maybe.

Moldy Beaches, The Kowalskis, The Getup Kids, and The Decals – certainly nothing all that new here. Most of it is almost ten years old. Then there is also Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces. All good stuff though …. maybe some new music after the first of the year.

Classic Alternative …

Live365 has a genre called classic alternative – a name I find a bit comical. Can the alternative really become classic? If it it, is it truly alternative? And I am not really sure what kind of music fits under the category? WBRU, the local alternative radio station in Rhode Island, has a retro lunch, but it seems to largely consist of what the programmers wish they had played back in the eighties, rather than what they did. Certainly anything with an edge is missing – The Replacements, Warren Zevon’s Sentimental Hygiene, Jesus And Mary Chain, Husker Du, Archers of Loaf. You sure can hear a lot of the Cure and the Smiths though. Anyway, the point being is classic alternative the alternative music that still gets airplay? Or is it just 80’s and 90’s alternative?

And the ironic thing is …. I list my station under classic alternative. And am adding Elvis Costello’s Live at El Mocambo, Archers of Loaf Icky Mettle, and Buffalo Tom’s Sleepy Eyed to the stream because I can’t seem to find them on the radio any more ….
